One of the best ways to visit this gigantic delta is to go to Sfântu Gheorghe. This village is easily accessible by boat and is home to all the habitat types of the delta itself, including the sea.  In addition, the local infrastructure is excellent and it is possible to walk around the village or take a boat to see other sites in the area.

The Danube Delta worth a visit at any time of the year but the best seasons are probably between late April and late May andbetween mid-September to mid-October.

Many information available here : https://danubebirdringing.wordpress.com/.

By season

Late March - mid-April

At this time the most common species are Robin (Erithacus rubecula) and Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita) with sometimes Siberian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus tristis). Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupa epos) are very common during the last days of March and the first of April. Temperatures can vary greatly between cold nights (<0°C) and pleasant days. The wind can also be very strong and cold. Take warm clothes, especially waterproof and windproof. The sun can be strong, so take sun protection too.

Mid-April - late May

One of the periods with the highest migration waves with most transsaharian species. Rare species at this season included Taiga Flycatcher (Ficedula albicilla), Pied Wheatear (Oenanthe pleschanka), Rüppell’s Warbler (Sylvia rueppelli), Masked Shrike (Lanius nubicus), Eastern Subalpine Warbler (Curruca albistriata), Semi-collared Flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata), Trumpeter Finch (Bucanetes githagineus), White-tailed Plover (Vanellus leucurus), Woodchat Shrike (Lanius senator), Spanish Sparrow (Passer hispaniolensis), Common Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus), Red-rumped Swallow (Cercopis daurica).

The temperature could be variable. The day temperature could be pleasant, but the night could be rather cold.

Late May - mid-June

A period with still many transsaharian species like Barred Warbler (Curruca nisoria), Eastern Olivaceous Warbler (Iduna pallida) and Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola). Rare species at this season included Greenish Warblers (Phylloscopus trochiloides), Blyth’s Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus dumetorum), Caspian Stonechat (Saxicola maurus hemprichii), Trumpeter Finch (Bucanetes githagineus), Common Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus).

The day temperature are generally pleasant. It could be hot (sometime more than 25°C) and often sunny. Don’t forget sun protections. In this period, there are a lot of mosquitoes, so take some insect repellent.

Mid-July - late August

A period with still a lot of trassaharians like Thrush Nightingale (Luscinia luscinia), Barred Warbler (Curruca nisoria), Eastern Olivaceous Warbler (Iduna pallida) and Paddyfield Warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola) but with difficult weather conditions and many mosquitoes.

The day are generally very hot (normally more than 30°C) with a with a high level of humidity. It is mostly sunny. Don’t forget sun protections. In this period, there are plenty lot of mosquitoes, so take some insect repellent.

It could be hot (sometime more than 25°C) and often sunny. Don’t forget sun protections. In this period, there are still a lot of mosquitoes, so take some insect repellent. Late September - early November The period with the most post-breeding migration and also the best time for Asian rarities. Rare species included Isabelline Shrike (Lanius isabellinus), Siberian Stonechat (Saxicola maurus), Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler (Locustella certhiola), Dusky Warbler (Phylloscopus fuscatus), Pallas’s Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus proregulus), Hume’s Leaf Warbler (Phylloscopus humei), Siberian Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus tristis), Pine Bunting (Emberiza leucocephalos). Sfântu Gheorghe (jud. Tulcea, Romania) is a small village of about 800 inhabitants located in the mouth of Sfântu Gheorghe branch of the Danube. The village is only accessible by boat (from Tulcea or Mahmudia) and it has remained rather well preserved.

From Tulcea to Sfântu Gheorghe : the village is accessible only by boat (beware of people whose propose you to bring you at the village, saying that it has no more boat… That’s can cost you until 200€!). Ask at the office! If you must sleep in Tulcea; a good choice is to go to the Hotel Insula. It is a good value for money and it is well located near the bus, train and boat station.

One-way : the duration of the journey is about 3 hours with the fast boat and 5 hours with the slow boat. The prices are 60 RON (fast boat: catamaran) and 48 RON (slow boat: nave classica). They leave from Tulcea at 13:30 and the boarding is at 12:30. The boats don’t navigate every day, so look at the timetable on the website. Until April 30 the boat leaves Tulcea on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. After this date, they will be more boats during the week, so it’s advice to check it before you leave. If you leave from Mahmudia (the best option if you travel by car) the the boat ticket costs 10 RON less and stops 1-2 hours after leaving Tulcea.

Return : the boats leave Sfântu Gheorghe at 7:00 with boarding at 6:00. Until April 30 the boat leaves Sf. Gheorghe on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. After this date, they will be more boats during the week.

Explain from where and how to get to this site with private and public transport.

Some other wildlife included Golden Jackal (Canis aureus), Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), European Otter (Lutra lutra), European Mink (Mustela lutreola) or ‘Black Sea’ Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena relicta) for the mammals. Interesting amphibians included Common Spadefoot (Pelobates fuscus), European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and Oriental tree frog (Hyla orientalis). Two reptiles are of interest because they are localized and threatened: Meadow Viper (Vipera ursinii) and Steppes Runner (Eremias arguta). The first one can be seen more or less everywhere in rush meadows and the second one in dune vegetation.

The site also has a beautiful beach with pleasant water from May to September.

Add information about other attractions at this site, including
• wildlife (apart from birds)
• sights (natural, cultural, archaeological, etc.)
• activities (e.g. for non-birding companions)

The area around Sfântu Gheorghe is very safe.

Between June and September mosquitoes can be very annoying, especially in the evening and in forested areas (take some repellent).

In summer (especially August) the village is invaded by tourists. Fortunately they are mostly on the beach and rarely outside in the early morning. At this time of year the temperatures are very hot and humid making it almost impossible to observe between 11am and 4pm.

Are there any security issues or other annoyances at this site? For
instance, these may include:
• offenses like robbery or theft
• natural hazards
• dangerous or annoying animals or plants (mosquitoes, leaches, thorn bushes, etc.)
• noise pollution
