Garden City Lands: Community Farm and Bog Conservation Area

49.17381 , -123.11943

Canada

This multi-purpose site is effectively an urban nature reserve, easily visited from Richmond or elsewhere in the Vancouver area. Although adjacent to the built-up suburb of Richmond, it is contiguous with a large forested area. Adjoining it to the east are a closed military area and the Richmond Nature Park, which could be visited in conjunction with the Garden City Lands.

The 55 ha site narrowly escaped development, being acquired by the City of Richmond in 2010. It is protected as part of an Agricultural Land Reserve, which allows for small-scale community farming as well as conservation. The site contains a remnant bog and scrub, an artificial lake and surrounding wetland, and community farmland. These habitats attract quite a rich avifauna. The lake has breeding Spotted Sandpipers and a number of waterfowl visit, including Hooded Merganser and Bufflehead. The marshes have breeding Common Yellowthroat, Tree Martin and Savannah Sparrow. Wilson's Snipe is present in winter and spring, Killdeer throughout the year. Northern Harrier is seen thoughout the year, Northern Shrike occasionally in winter. Around 115 species have been recorded on eBird.

The site has birds to see throughout the year. In spring, the lake may hold Cinnamon Teal, Bufflehead and Gadwall. Wilson's Snipe, Least Sandpiper and other shorebirds also visit in spring. Solitary Sandpiper is a spring and fall passage migrant. In summer, the lake has breeding Spotted Sandpipers and Tree Martins use nest boxes provided near the lake. The reeds and scrub in the northwest corner have breeding Yellowthroat, Savannah Sparrow and Cedar Waxwing. Winter visitors include Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler and American Wigeon.

The site is quite large and at least an hour and a half is advisable to survey the birds present. The richest area is the northwest corner containing the wetland and farmland, but the whole site is worth exploring via a network of paths.
