  • Timing and strategy

Since it is a very cold place, it may not be the best idea to start before dawn unless you have clothing that protects you from the cold. However, if you arrive before sunrise you will have a good chance to observe Mexican Whip-poor-will.

Bird activity sometimes increases when sunlight raises the ambient temperature. Starting around 7:00 am is a good option. At the beginning of the Camino de los Humeros you can find potato fields where you can observe some species of sparrows, depending on the season, Larks, Burrowing Owl, among other species.

After passing the deviation from the town of Frijol Colorado, the habitat changes and you will find more vegetation and the ground becomes a little more rocky, therefore the species that you can observe are different such as Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay, Scott's Oriole, House Finch and others. When the vegetation has flowers it is a good time to observe hummingbirds.

To get to Los Humeros road, the first thing you have to do is get to the city of Perote. Once in Perote, you must locate yourself on Reforma Avenue and go to the town of Frijol Colorado, once you cross the bridge that passes over the Xalapa-Perote federal highway you can start bird watching.

Bird watching takes place along the road therefore there is no specification required for access to the site. You can take some trails that are on the side of the road but there is no instruction necessary for this either.

In some parts the ground consists of rocks of volcanic origin, therefore resistant footwear is necessary.

The Cofre de Perote National Park is located near Los Humeros, it is also a good place for bird watching. Also nearby is the archaeological zone of Cantona. Within the city of Perote is the Fortress of San Carlos, a military building built in the 18th century.

The Cofre de Perote National Park is located near Los Humeros, it is also a good place for bird watching. Also near the place is nearby is the archaeological zone of Cantona. Within the city of Perote is the Fortress of San Carlos, a military building built in the 18th century.

Once in Los Humeros you will not be able to find hotels or restaurants but within the city of Perote you will be able to find hotels, restaurants and gas stations. The city of Perote is located 10-15 minutes from Los Humeros.

Once in Los Humeros you will not be able to find hotels or restaurants but within the city of Perote you will be able to find hotels, restaurants and gas stations. The city of Perote is located 10-15 minutes from Los Humeros.

Because bird watching is on the side of the road, you must be careful with cars, especially with trailers.

Within the area you can find a kind of poisonous snake, pay attention when using the trails that are on the side of the road.
