Birding is best in the early morning. April-May is the best time of year to visit, although the habitat diversity can make for a pretty good day of birding any time of year. Yellow-throated Warbler is regular in the sycamores along Chartiers Creek in April through Summer. Virginia Rails breed locally in the cattail marsh by the boardwalk, the 1st breeding record for Allegheny County. Swamp Sparrow can be very common in and around the marsh in October-April. American Tree Sparrow is also fairly common here in winter.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding
