The Kuvaja bird watching tower is located in a large (48 km2) string bog area protected by law. The tower is located in the SW corner of the Vaala municipality. In biogeographically it is in Ostrobottnia kajanensis province (Kn/Ok or Kainuu).

Kuvaja area seen from the watching tower is a string bog in natural stage and very typical for the region.

Most notable bird species nesting in the bog are red-throated loon, common crane, whooper swan and taiga bean goose. However, number of bird pairs are not great.

In 2021 a large wind turbine farm (27 turbines when finished) has been built south from the tower.

Best time for visit is probably from April to June. Also in autumn some migrating birds can be seen.

In winter from December to March there is not much to see except the bog itself. However, the access road (Metsälammentie) may not be open in winter.

From Vuolijoentie (in Vaala, road 879) or from the other Vuolijoentie (in Siikalatva, road 8190) via Metsälammentie by car. Metsälammentie is a gravel road but mostly in decent condition.

Vaala is the nearest municipality center with a railway station. Nearest airports can be found in Kajaani and in Oulu.
