Honkala shore bird-watching tower

61.00930 , 24.51690

Finland

Kahilisto

At the head of the lake Katumajärvi just outside Hämeenlinna, this is a small, but diverse and species-rich nature reserve, superbly maintained by a group of enthusiastic volunteers. The birdwatching tower (Lintutorni) is reached by a boardwalk of around 500m, signposted from route 10 east of Hämeenlinna. The nature trail (Luontopolku) passes through a varied habitat including marshes and deciduous woodland, which contains nesting boxes intended for tits and flycatchers. The tower provides a good view of the lake and reedbeds. Whooper swans, geese, grebes, divers, ducks, gulls and (in summer) terns can be seen on the lake. The reedbeds are home to Great Bitterns, Reed, Sedge and Great Reed Warblers, as well as Reed Buntings. The woodland is home to passerines such as Common and Lesser Whitethroat, Spotted and Pied flycatchers, Common Redstart and Tree Pipit. At least six species of woodpecker have been recorded. Raptors seen overhead include Western Marsh Harrier and Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Hobby in summer, and Rough-legged Buzzard in winter. As of 2021 over 100 species have been recorded (records on eBird, where the site is referred to as Hämeenlinna-Kahilisto, are based on a small number of visits and thus greatly underestimate the diversity of species that occur).

With numerous breeding species, the reserve is rewarding in summer as well as at migration times. Passerines in particular are more active early in the day.

A visit could be completed within an hour, but to allow for patient watching at the tower and exploration of the surounding area, at least an hour and a half would be preferable.

The signposted nature trail turns into a boardwalk leading across the marshes to the observation tower. Another short boardwalk branches off to the East, allowing visitors to explore the marshland further.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding
