Many interesting mammals can be found, such as the Red Deer, the Cretan Wild Goat (introduced) and the Grey Wolf. Equally rich is the reptile fauna (Erhard's Wall Lizard, Balkan Green Lizard, Marginated Tortoise, Nose-horned Viper etc).

Red Deer Cretan Wild Goat Grey Wolf

There are two mountain refuges that provide food and shelter, Mpafi and Flampouri. Both are found in the central part of the mountain and can be reached quite easily, either by car or on foot.
