Port Alfred has good birding all year round, although late Spring and early summer is the best time for both European and intra-African migrants. Early morning is best for birds that occur in wooded areas, while the time for shorebirds depends on the low tide times. Most of the roads in the area are driveable and in fair condition. Although a 4x4 is not usually required, a vehicle with fair ground clearance would be an advantage. Tim Cockcroft, the local bird guide, knows the best routes to take. Although many species can be seen in a day visit, two to three days are recommended to explore other habitats in nearby areas.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding
