San Cipriano can be visited all year round. The climate changes little during the year, the average temperature is 25°C and rain is very frequent. The driest months are January to March.

As almost everywhere, bird activity is highest early morning, but exciting species can be spotted throughout the day, especially when it is overcast or after rainfalls.

Birding is done on foot along the various well-maintained trails in the reserve. Some trails may be muddy, so be sure to bring your rubber boots (which also provide some protection against poisonous snakes).

Since many of the local specialties are very secretive, it is recommended to spend at least 2 nights (3 days) in the area, preferably more. A good local guide who has a trained ear and eye and who knows where to find the scarcer species is essential.

San Cipriano is popular with day tourists from Cali or Buenaventura, because the river and natural pools in the forest offer excellent swimming opportunities. It is best to avoid weekends and public holidays.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding

San Cipriano is not connected to the road network. The only way to get there is by the (in)famous "brujitas" (little witches). They are basically wooden platforms with seats travelling along the disused railway tracks, powered by a motorbike. It is a thrilling and reasonably safe way to travel. The round trip costs around COP 18.000. You can take the brujitas from two locations along the Cali–Buenaventura road, either in Zaragosa or in Cordoba (see map). Both places have bus stops and parkings for private cars. The parking in Cordoba is next to the brujita station, while in Zaragosa you first have to cross the river on foot over a suspension bridge. Once you reach San Cipriano, the only way to move around is on foot.

Explain from where and how to get to this site with private and public transport.

The reserve offers great opportunities for swimming or tubing on the crystal clear rivers or in natural pools ("charcos") in the forest and some beautiful waterfalls to visit. The biodiversity in the area is overwhelming. Lovers of butterflies, dragonflies, frogs or botanists will not get bored.

Add information about other attractions at this site, including
• wildlife (apart from birds)
• sights (natural, cultural, archaeological, etc.)
• activities (e.g. for non-birding companions)

San Cipriano is popular with tourists and therefore offers a good, albeit mostly simple, infrastructure. A variety of restaurants and basic accommodation (hotels and guesthouses) is available.

A more comfortable and slightly more expensive option is the Hotel run by the Fundación San Cipriano. They have very nice rooms for couples or small groups and also offer catering. The large property also has a campsite. The Foundation has an interesting program of scientific tourism and they are currently building a butterfly and an orquid farm. For reservations and more info contact Shany Hernández (+573114953734).

San Cipriano is very safe, especially if you move around with a local guide. Never leave the paths if you are on you own, since you may get lost.

Mosquitoes and horse-flies may sometimes be annoying. If walking around at dusk or at night, be aware of pit vipers and other poisonous snakes that like to rest on the trails. For the same reason it's safer to walk around in rubber boots.

Since San Cipriano is very popular with noisy day visitors, it is recommended to avoid weekends and public holidays.

Are there any security issues or other annoyances at this site? For
instance, these may include:
• offenses like robbery or theft
• natural hazards
• dangerous or annoying animals or plants (mosquitoes, leaches, thorn bushes, etc.)
