Taiwan

Longluan Lake or Longluantan (龍鑾潭) lies on the Hengchun peninsula on the southern tip of Taiwan, a strategic location on the migration route of many bird species. It is in the Kenting area, renowned for the mass migration of Grey-faced Buzzards and Chinese Sparrowhawks which congregate before embarking on the sea crossing to the Philippines. Other species such as Cattle, Great and Little Egrets also congregate in large numbers in the autumn.

As the largest freshwater lake in Taiwan, Longluantan is an especially important site for wintering and migrating water birds. The lake is surrounded by parkland, wetlands and farmland which support a wide range of species. Over 270 species have been recorded, making the site the most productive 'hotspot' in Pingtung County.

The site is well worth visiting at any time, but especially rewarding at migration periods and in winter.

From May-June and August-October, Whiskered and White-winged Terns are commonly present, while Gull-billed, Little and other terns occur occasionally.

In winter, resident Eastern Spot-Billed Ducks are joined by Garganey, Gadwall, Common Pochard, Greater Scaup and Falcated Duck. Geese include Taiga and Tundra Bean-geese as well as Greater White-fronted and Swan Goose.

Great, Intermediate, Little and Cattle Egrets are common and congregate in large flocks on migration. Purple Heron, Greater Painted-snipe and Pheasant-tailed Jacana occur regularly.

Resident raptors include Osprey, Black-winged Kite and Crested Serpent Eagle. On autumn migration, Grey-faced Buzzard, Chinese and Japanese Sparrowhawk occur. Eastern Marsh Harrier and Eastern Buzzard are winter visitors.

The parkland surounding the Center has several Taiwan endemic species including Styan's Bulbul, Taiwan Barbet, Taiwan Hwamei and Taiwan Bamboo-Partridge. Zitting and Golden-headed Cisticolas may be seen in the long grass. It is worth examining any pigeons carefully: in addition to the resident Spotted and Red Collared Dove, Asian Emerald Dove and occasionally Whistling and White-bellied Green-pigeon occur.

In addition to the lake and the parkland surrounding the Nature Center, the wetlands along Longluan Road, to the west of the lake, are often productive. Black-winged Stilt, Common and Green Sandpiper are resident, while other shorebirds such as Greenshank, Pacific Golden Plover, Swinhoe's and Pin-tailed Snipe occur on migration.

By car, scooter or bicycle, the site is easily reached from the town of Hengchun. As shown on the map, the Nature Centre could be approached via either Longluan Road on the north side or Nanguang Road on the south side of the lake. To maximise birding opportunities, one can make a circuit of the lake. For example, take the main road (highway 26) south from Hengchun, turn right on Nanguang Road, stop at the parking area at the south side of the lake, then proceed to the Nature Centre on the west bank of the lake.  By returning to Hengchun or the main highway via the northern route, one can pass the wetlands along Longluan Road which are often productive.

Hengchun can be reached in 2-3 hours by express bus from Kaohsiung which has an international airport.

Explain from where and how to get to this site with private and public transport.
