Mexico

The Camino a Cansa Burro is especially famous in the central region of Veracruz for the community of bird watchers since this is where the raptor banding station operated by PRONATURA is located. However, visits to the station must be scheduled in advance. The site in general is a combination of sugarcane crops, paddocks and coastal dune vegetation. Along the way the changes in the vegetation allow a very interesting combination of birds, and in migratory season it is an excellent place to observe migratory birds from passerines to raptors.

It is best to arrive at sunrise time or a few minutes earlier. The activity of the birds begins early but nevertheless around noon the heat can become annoying.

Because it is a path that people use to visit their pastures and crops, you will find trucks throughout the day. The best strategy is to look for shady places and park there to get out of the car and walk around in search of the birds. At the end of the road you will find a wetland where you can see water birds.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding

The only way to get there is with your own car. First you must get to the city of Cardel and once there take the Veracruz - Poza Rica highway towards Poza Rica. From Cardel to the entrance to Cansa Burro is approximately 17 km away, you will find a PEMEX gas station on the right side of the road, the entrance is a few meters ahead of the gas station on the right side.

Once on the road that is next to the gas station, you must go straight until you find an electric power station and take the path on the left side and from there you can start bird watching.

Explain from where and how to get to this site with private and public transport.

The road to Cansa Burro has fences that prevent the passage of cattle to the roads so sometimes you can find some closed fences but there is no problem in opening them to be able to pass obviously you must close them after passing. At the end of the path marked on the map you will be able to see the sand dunes on the right side of the path that lead to the banding station, however access to this part is restricted. In order to visit the banding station you must make an appointment with PRONATURA.

Provide information on how to enter this site, which may include:
• entry points
• entry permits / entry tickets and fees
• opening hours / opening season
• other restrictions

Note that this section should only contain information on how to ACCESS (= enter) a site. Info on how to REACH a site should be added to "How to get there" section.
