General Travelling Information
The Top End of Australia's Northern Territory is a well established holiday destination for independent travelers. We visited Darwin (coast, mangroves, monsoon forest) and the national parks of Mary River, Kakadu and Nitmiluk, which provide riparian habitats, wetlands, tropical monsoon savannah and the western edge of the sandstone escarpment of the Arnhem Land, with its specialties and endemics. Around Katherine some dry habitat (desert) species are found at the northern edge of their distribution. Flights, rental cars and accomodation are easily booked online, but once you leave Darwin, food and petrol are sometimes far apart and it pays to stock up whenever possible. Groceries, dining and petrol is available in Jabiru and Cooinda (Kakadu) and Pine Creek. Katherine is a big town, with everything you need. We opted to stay in cabins in holiday parks and resorts, which were booked easily on the internet. The itinary was a hybrid of activities to keep the family happy (two daughters 13 and 11 years) and to maximize the number of target species (lifers).
The weather was hot and dry (30-35 °C). Bushfires are a common feature on the horizon and sometimes close to the roads.
Insect repellent is a must. Flies are a nuisance in most places, but don't bite. The occasional horse-flies do ! Mangroves and wetlands are full of mosquitos and sand flies. The last ones are tiny and quiet, but their bites itch for at least a week.
Most rental companies don't allow driving after sunset on the highways (meaning basically out of towns), otherwise you loose your insurance. Keep that in mind for early and late excursions (sunrise 7am, sunset 7pm).

Facilities & accommodation
There's a picnic site at a lake nearby.
Other wildlife observed

Bicentennial Park
City park along the coast. We started from the car park at Aquascene with some mangrove patches and walked south. We also visited the Aquascene Fish Feeding Spectacle, where you can get in contact with wild fish at high tide. Birdingwise nothing special, but close views of common birds.
How to get there
Aquascene car park at -12.459643, 130.832556
Facilities & accommodation
We were surprised about the lack of food opportunities in the park - no cafes or ice-cream, just a playground and an open air gym. But downtown is close.
Other wildlife observed
- wild sea fish at Aquascene
- Metallic Snake-eyed Skink (Cryptoblepharus metallicus)
Palmerston Wastewater Plant
This site is supposed to be the best site for Mangrove Fantail. The facility itself is off-limits for birders, but I had information on how to access the site from outside the fence. However this track was littered with rubbish and recently a bush fire went through. I couldn't find any other access and had to leave.
Target species
-
Mangrove Fantail
Rhipidura phasiana
dipped as site could not be accessed
How to get there
park here -12.5048, 130.95541 and walk in along the fence (if the rubbish dumb ever gets cleaned up)

Mertens Water Monitor
Coconut Grove Mangroves
Best site for White-breasted Whistler. I wasn't too impressed with this site. Lots of rubbish and it feels a bit like in someones backyard. In fact, I met a resident in underwear and a cup of coffee, going for a morning stroll with his big barking dog. I also found a homeless guys camp at an elevated spot within the mangroves. Some more local knowledge about this site might be useful.
Target species
-
White-breasted Whistler
Pachycephala lanioides
dipped, but didn't spend much time at site - see above
How to get there

Mary River Wilderness Retreat
We stayed one night in a cabin. Initially just planned as a stop-over between Darwin and Kakadu NP, it turned out to be a good site on its own. It's a huge park with open and forest habitats and a network of trails. You can also access the Mary River by renting a small boat and explore on your own. It's quite an adventure cruising with the family on a croc-infested river. And it gives the opportunity to find Great-billed Heron and Black Bittern, as well as Azure Kingfisher.

Gravel road south of the Arnhem Highway well-known as a good birding site. Stop whenever you see birds or at promising looking access points to the woodland (tracks, flowering/fruiting trees, recently burned areas). Easy to stop at the side of the road. Some sandy patches (4x4 recommended).
Target species

Black-tailed Treecreeper
Climacteris melanurus
How to get there
Leave Arnhem Highway at -12.74634, 131.47898 and drive south
Jabiru
Administration center of Kakadu Nationalpark and in my opinion the best base to explore the major attractions of Kakadu
Target species
-
Partridge Pigeon
Geophaps smithii
Was supposed to be common around the Bowali Visitor Center and along the short grass edges of roads around Jabiru, but not for me. In hindsight, it might have paid off to get out of the car and walk along the roads. This was very effective later on the trip, when I flushed Common Bronzewings every time I left the car around Katherine, which were invisible before.
How to get there
Anbinik Kakadu Resort at -12.66573, 132.83575
Bowali Visitor Center at -12.67393, 132.81752

Facilities & accommodation
We stayed for 3 nights in the Anbinik Kakadu Resort in their unique Bush Chalets. Highly recommended accomodation and excellent restaurant. Jabiru has a super-market, petrol station and ATM. The Bowali Visitor Center has good exhibition on the nature of Kakadu Nationalpark and Jabiru Lake has a nice picnic site.
Get petrol before you leave the park driving south, as the next station might be Pine Creek. The petrol station half-way out at Mary River Roadhouse was closed and we were lucky to get some emergency petrol in a canister.

Yellow Water & Cooinda
A guided boat tour along Yellow Water River is a must-do in Kakadu. Not specialized on birds, but guides are knowledgeable.
The boat jetty has a boardwalk into the billabong, which can be explored before or after the tour.
The last tour ends at sunset. We had to drive back to Jabiru in the dark, which is not allowed by the rental companies. But the sunset over the billabong was worth it.

Edith Falls Road
Best site to see Gouldian Finch. The birds come to drink at puddles in the creek bed. It's not necessary to stumble around in the creek bed. Just sit and wait for flocks in the surrounding bushes going back and forth to drink.

Platycercus venustus
Only site, where I saw that species. Expected it to be more common.
How to get there

Katherine area
Rather big town with everything you need (supermarket, good restaurants and cafes, big visitor center, ATMs, petrol stations). It's the gate to the Nitmiluk Gorge Nationalpark.
There are some reedy habitats along the Katherine River, but too dry at the end of the dry season.

Central Arnhem Road
Also called Mainoru Road. Well know location for some specialties. Stop whenever you see birds or at promising looking access points to the woodland (tracks, flowering/fruiting trees, recently burned areas).
Target species
-
Red-backed Kingfisher
Todiramphus pyrrhopygius
Check wires along the road
-
Black-chinned Honeyeater
Melithreptus gularis
Check flowering trees. Way rarer than similar looking White-throated Honeyeater, but contrast yellow back to darker wings and size quite distinctive.
-
Northern Shrike-tit
Falcunculus whitei
Extremely rare and I didn't manage to see it.
How to get there
8 km marker at -14.60243, 132.71183. That's where I stopped, but anywhere along the road should be good.
Victoria Highway
Another good birding road south of Katherine along the Victoria Highway. Again, stop whenever you see birds or at promising looking access points to the woodland (tracks, flowering/fruiting trees, recently burned areas). This road is famous for two creek crossings (Chainman and Chinaman Creeks), with good chances to observe Gouldian Finches coming to drink. As I have seen them at Edith Falls Road, I didn' check these sites.
Target species
-
Yellow-throated Miner
Manorina flavigula
How to get there
The furthest I drove from Katherine was at -14.66121, 132.10061.
Edith Falls
Very scenic waterfall and swimming spot. Wetter than surrounding habitats, therefore quite birdy.
How to get there
park here -14.17898, 132.18822
Facilities & accommodation
toilets, safe swim spot, restaurant (cafe)
Bayview & Tiger Brennan Drive Mangroves
I visited this site on the last morning to clean up my list of dipped mangrove species (unsuccessfully). Easy access, but lots of people (even early morning) and masses of sandflies. These tiny gnats eat you alive when you stop for just a second and bites itch for weeks. At least it was the only site, where I got an Australien Hobby.
