The small lakes of Kaldbakstjarnir host a good variety of breeding birds, including a friendly pair of Great Northern Divers and several pairs of Horned Grebes. Largest of the lakes is visible from the main road south of Húsavík on the seaside. There is a gravel road toward a birdwatching shelter by the lake. There are walking trails around the lake. A small lake is also to the east of the main road, called Yltjörn. The name suggests that the lake is warm and it sure is. There are about 30 species of breeding birds by the lakes, but more than 100 species have been seen there.
