Húsavík harbor is the base of the well known whale-watching of Skjálfandi bay. It is also a good destination for birders travelling in NE-Iceland. The harbor area is well known for good variety of gulls. For instance it is possible to find Iceland Gulls there almost anytime, even though they can be tricky in July and August. It is always interesting to have a close look at flocks of Black-headed Gulls at the harbour in the hope of seeing scarce visitors such as Little Gull or even Ross's Gull. Harlequin Ducks are often found be by a small river at the southern boundary of the harbor. Common Scoters are usually easy to find at the sea south of the harbor in spring and early summer. Black Guillemots are found year round.
