Duru Lake

Terkos, also known as Durusu, is a fresh water lake with lagoon origin located in the north-west of the European side of Istanbul, approximately 40-50 kms away from the city. Terkos Basin, which also includes Terkos Lake, is one of the oldest water sources in Istanbul. The basin is located in the north of the Çatalca Peninsula, most of which is within the borders of the province of Istanbul.

Most of the area is covered with forests. It has rich vegetation with its forests, heathlands, fresh water and dune ecosystems. The uncontaminated nature of the lake has resulted in the emergence of an extremely rich wetland system with well-preserved habitats and rare plant species in the basin.

The most important breeding water birds are Ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca), Lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina), Little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus) and Squacco heron (Ardeola ralloides). Red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis), White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) and Greater spotted eagle (Aquila clanga), which are endangered worldwide, winter in the region in small numbers. The lake hosts more than 10 thousand waterfowl at the same time during the winter months.

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) criteria are considered as the most comprehensive and practical method for selection of protected areas to date and IUCN launched guidelines for the application of these criteria to undertake national gap analysis (IUCN 2005). The KBA approached has been for the for the first time tested in Turkey by Doğa Derneği and the list of sites has been published at www.sifiryokolus.org. 266 KBAs have been identified to date using various species groups. Terkos Lake is one of them.
