El Salvador

Cinquera is small town in the province of Cabañas during the civil war due to heavy combats between the guerrillas and the army the inhabitants had to abandon it. Most of them spend around 8 years in refugee camps acroos from the border in Honduras. Only the inhabitants that had join the guerrillas stay but in the surrounding mountains same land that in the past were Haciendas owned by landlords that made them work in the corn fields and other plantations. A couple of years before the end of the war (1990) most of the people decided to return despite the conflict. When the peace agreements were signed the people from the town were given land, those surrounding mountains that they were working in the past. Part of that land is what has become the Ecological Park that the community built. It is a secondary forest with some old trees, the vegetation you can see is approximately 40 years old and what it used be crop fields now has become a patch of dry forest. The main attraction of the park is its history since in that mountain they are still camps, stoves, trenches that by hiring local guide Rafael you can have a delight of a tour about the history of the place.

Cinquera is approximately 80 kilometers away from San Salvador and it takes around 2 hours to get there. Another possibility is doing a daytrip from Suchitoto that you are 30 minutes away from Cinquera. The best time to do the tour is at 6 a.m, the park rangers are not there early but when you leave you can pay the fees to them. It is much better if you have a guide with you since the trails are not well marked. The trails is a total of 4 kilometers long and the difficulty is III out of V.  The highest point of the trail is the observation tower and then goes down to the river area to go back to the main parking lot. There is good birding along the year but the best time to do it will be between March and May since is the breeding season of the Long-tailed Manakin and your chances to the courtship display are high.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding
