Jardín village

5.59859 , -75.81962

Colombia

Jardín is situated at 1750 metres in the Western Cordillera, a few hours south of Medellín. The village is known for its colourful colonial architecture and its laid-back atmosphere but is also an exciting place for birdwatchers. A large variety of birds can be found in and around the village. Indisputably, the highlight is the large lek of Andean Cock-of-the-rock at the southern edge of the village. The local subspecies, sanguinolentus, is often said to be the most beautiful, because it has a deeper red body plumage compared to other subspecies. Moreover, in the rural vicinity of the village you can find a variety of habitats including gardens, coffee plantations, pastures, woods and creeks. On a walk near the village you can observe a large diversity of bird species which inhabit these semi-natural areas.

The village of Jardín is also a great base for exploring the surrounding hills, many of which are still covered in dense forests. If you are looking for the scarcer specialities of the Western Cordillera, like the Yellow-eared Parrot, you need to venture further away from the village, for example up to Alto de Ventanas.

Jardín can be visited all year. The driest months are December to March, while the risk of rain is highest in April–May and September–October. However, rain showers can be expected all year.

One day in around the village is enough to see many of the local species. It is easy to move around on foot, or you can hire one of the local tuc-tucs. If you want to explore the surrounding hills, you need at least another full day.

The Andean Cock-of-the-rocks are active at their lek all year, although activity can almost cease for a few days in summer and is best early morning and in the evening. You will get satisfactory views if you spend one or two hours at the lek, although you might need more time if you plan to take photos or film.

Generally, activity of birds around the village is best early morning and in the evening.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding

Jardín can be easily reached from Medellín by private or public transport. Buses depart regularly from the Terminal del Sur in Medellín and take around 3.5 hours. You can also get to Jardín from Riosucio in the south, but take into account that the road, which crosses Alto de Ventanas, is in bad condition and you might get stuck if you do not have a 4x4. There are also a few buses travelling between Riosucio and Jardín, ask locally for schedules.

Explain from where and how to get to this site with private and public transport.
